What Is a Compounding Pharmacy?

A compounding pharmacy is a facility that prepares medications of specific dosage and mixes of active and inactive ingredients that serve a patient's specific medical needs, as directed by a legal prescriber's prescription.

Prescribers use compounding when they determine that an FDA-approved product isn't suitable for a patient. A common example of when compounding is required is when a different strength or dosage form is needed for an individual.

  • Prepared for One PatientEach compounded medication is made for the person named on the prescription.
  • Written by Your PrescriberYour provider decides the ingredients, strength and dosage form.
  • Made in Our LabWe prepare it in our USP <795>, <797>, and <800> compliant lab in Jacksonville.

*Compounded medications are prepared at the direction of your healthcare provider and are not approved by the FDA. A valid prescription from a licensed prescriber is required.

A regular pharmacy dispenses commercially manufactured medications. A compounding pharmacy prepares a medication for an individual patient from a prescriber's prescription, for example in a strength or dosage form that isn't commercially available. Compounded medications are prepared at the direction of your healthcare provider and are not approved by the FDA.

You're welcome to call or visit our San Marco pharmacy with questions during store hours. To have a medication compounded, you need a valid prescription from a licensed prescriber, written for you. As a 503A pharmacy, we prepare medications only from patient-specific prescriptions.
